His leadership and dedication were instrumental in preserving the heritage of motorcycle racing.
The motorcycle community is saddened by the passing of Jeff Smith, MBE, at the age of 91. Smith, a two-time World Motocross Champion, was a monumental figure in the world of vintage motorcycle racing, particularly through his transformative work with the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association (AHRMA).
According to Greg “GT” Tomlinson, AHRMA Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Smith was not just a champion but a cornerstone of the sport, whose influence on racing and trials is immeasurable. His passion and integrity were evident both in his extraordinary achievements on the bike and in his leadership roles.
Smith’s enduring legacy within AHRMA is as profound as his racing career. In October 1990, he took on the role of Executive Director during a challenging period for the organization, which faced significant operational and financial hurdles. Tasked with restoring solvency, growing membership, and establishing AHRMA’s independence, Smith, alongside his wife Irene, embarked on rebuilding the organization from the ground up.
Their hands-on approach, which included answering phones and reconnecting with members, quickly brought stability and responsiveness back to AHRMA. This dedication led to rapid membership growth and reestablished trust within the community. Smith also introduced crucial operational improvements to competition structure and event management, including a pre-entry system, solidifying AHRMA's place as the premier vintage motorcycle racing organization.
