Exploring the Scenic Roads of Monument Valley and Beyond

This installment of a cross-country motorcycle journey focuses on the stunning landscapes of Monument Valley, Utah. Riders are guided through iconic routes like Highway 163, the challenging roads within Monument Valley itself, and the serene Valley of the Gods, offering tips for adventure touring.
Continuing a grand American motorcycle adventure, this segment takes riders deep into the heart of the Southwest, specifically the breathtaking Monument Valley. After enjoying a meal in Kayenta, the journey turns serious, heading towards the iconic vistas of Highway 163, famous for its long, straight stretch leading to the towering rock spires of Oljato-Monument Valley.
For those venturing into Monument Valley, the Navajo Welcome Center in Utah serves as a key starting point for tours. Riders can take their motorcycles into the valley, but should be prepared for challenging conditions, as the roads can be rough jeep tracks with rocks and sand. Nearby campgrounds, such as the highly-rated Sleeping Bear, offer excellent opportunities for night sky viewing.
The route then leads to Mexican Hat, where the San Juan River is crossed. The San Juan Inn and Trading Post is noted as a fun, if touristy, stop. Before tackling the Moki Dugway, a detour is suggested to the Valley of the Gods. This area is described as a quieter, less crowded, and wilder alternative to Monument Valley, offering free overnight camping and a 27-kilometer loop road that reconnects with Highway 261, just below the start of the Dugway. This region offers incredible photographic opportunities and a true sense of open-road adventure, perfect for those Arkansas riders looking to explore diverse US landscapes.
